The oldest is the indigenous name, Muhheakantuck, which loosely translated means \u201criver that flows both ways,\u201d which is an appropriate name for a tidal river. When the river was discovered, in 1524, by Giovanni da Verrazzano, an Italian explorer who sailed on behalf of the French, it was named \u201cRivi\u00e8re Montagnes,\u201d the River of the Mountains. When the area was populated by Dutch mariners and river merchants, they called it \u201cNoort River,\u201d \u201cBig River,\u201d and \u201cMauritius River,\u201d after Prince Mauritius.
